South by Southwest (SXSW)
SXSW Music is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with more than 2,000 performers playing in more than 90 venues around downtown Austin, Texas over four days in March.
The first South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) was held in 1987 and the music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to over 16,000 registrants.
SXSW's original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or the internet. And Austin continues to be the perfect location.
WOMEX - the World Music Expo is, as UNESCO - Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity declared;
"The most important international professional market of world music of every kind. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences and documentary films. It contributes to networking as an effective means of promoting music and culture of all kinds across frontiers."
Since 1994 WOMEX editions in Belgium (Brussels), Denmark (Copenhagen), France (Marseille),Germany (Berlin and Essen), Great Britain (Newcastle Gateshead), Netherlands (Rotterdam), Spain (Sevilla) and Sweden (Stockholm) have affirmed the value and potential of networking across borders, be these musical, political, cultural or commercial. The yearly event (and the growing number of WOMEX-partnered events around the world) reflects "the soundscape of global diversity" and is at the forefront of support and exchange for small and medium enterprises in the fields of creative and cultural industries.
